The way land records are being maintained in India has come a long way – in the past, during the reign of kings and emperors land revenue was an important source of income – later on, came the British who helped to standardize the system a bit. However, land records have always witnessed a general apathy, a lack of transparency and rampant corruption. Having realized that such problems exist the Government of India started the National Land Records Modernization Program(NLRMP) – the aim here was to initiate the task of standardization and computerization of records all over India in a phased manner.
